Why Upgrading Your Brakes Matter
At OK4WD, most of the vehicles we build don't stay stock for very long.
We add camper systems, bumpers, winches, suspension kits, larger wheels and tires, skid plates, water tanks, fridges, camping gear, the list goes on and on. While all those upgrades improve the vehicles capability on and off the trail as well as our comfort when using it, they also add something else, something important:
Weight.
And weight changes everything about how your vehicle drives and especially how it stops.
That's why we spend so much time helping customers choose the correct tires and suspension for what their general vehicle use is intended for. But those upgrades are only half the equation when building out these rigs. If you're adding significant weight to your vehicle, upgrading your braking system is just as important for your safety and confidence behind the wheel.

The Reality of Driving a Heavy 4WD
No one plans for emergency braking situations, but they happen every day.
A car pulls out in front of you. Traffic suddenly decides to come to a dead stop on a fast-paced highway. That yellow light turns red faster than expected. A deer decides the middle of the road at night is a great time to cross. When moments like this happen, your braking system is the only thing standing between a close call and a collision. I feel the anxiety of this daily when I drive my built-out Tacoma with all that extra weight.
The problem is that factory brake systems, even on 4wd vehicles meant to handle extra weight, were engineered around a stock vehicle weight. Once you add hundreds of pounds of extra gear, those OEM brakes are now working far beyond what they were originally designed to handle. That mass increases stopping distances, creates more heat, and puts significantly more stress on every component in the braking system.
Bigger Tires Make the Problem Worse
One of the most overlooked modifications affecting braking performance is larger wheels and tires. Most enthusiasts upgrade tires for better ground clearance, durability, and off-road traction. But larger tires also add rotational mass, which requires substantially more braking force to slow down. (Sourced from https://powerbrakeglobal.com)
Powerbrake explains that heavier wheel and tire combinations dramatically affect braking performance because the braking system now has to control additional rotational inertia.

Larger diameter tires also create more leverage against the braking system, meaning the brakes must work harder to achieve the same stopping power as stock. (Sourced from Powerbrake)
In simple terms:
- Bigger tires = more weight
- More weight = longer stopping distances
- Longer stopping distances = reduced safety margin on the road
It's Not Just About Stopping Power
Most people think brake upgrades are only about stopping on shorter notice. That's only part of it. Consistency matters just as much.
According to Powerbrake, true brake performance reveals itself during repeated braking events, not just a single panic stop.
Anyone who has driven down a mountain pass with a fully loaded vehicle knows this feeling. After repeated brake applications, factory systems begin to build heat and lose effectiveness, a phenomenon commonly known as brake fade. (Sourced from Powerbrake)
Powerbrakes X-Line 4x4 Big Brake Kits are engineered specifically to maintain braking consistency under repeated heavy braking situations and high heat loads. Whether you're going down a steep trail, towing a trailer, or driving a heavily loaded overland rig across the country, confidence comes in knowing your brakes will respond the same way every single time you press the pedal.
Dakar-Proven Engineering
Powerbrake is not simply building upgraded brake kits for your typical vehicles. Their systems were born from off-road racing.

Powerbrake developed braking systems used in the Dakar Rally and FIA Cross Country World Championships. These are some of the hardest motorsport environments on the planet! The same engineering, technology, and craftsmanship from those race-proven systems directly carry over into their X-Line kits that you can buy here: Powerbrake Performance Upgrade Big Brake Kits | OK4WD
Features like:
- Billet-machined multi-piston calipers
- Advanced heat management
- High-performance rotors
- Stainless braided brake lines
- Race-developed pad compounds
...are all designed specifically for heavy 4WD vehicles.
And unlike many of the generic "performance brake kits," Powerbrake systems are purpose built for overland and off-road applications where vehicle weight, terrain, and sustained braking loads matter most.
Why We Trust Powerbrake at OK4WD
At OK4WD, we don't recommend products simply because they look good on paper (or on the vehicle). Performance matters to us and we test every product that we bring on board to our lineup.
Our own show vehicles are driven hard all across the United States throughout the year, from long highway miles to trade shows to technical trails and fully loaded travel. For example, we drove highway miles to Arizona from NJ so far this year, and we are about to embark on a weeklong trip on the TransAmerica trail in Idaho with Mountain State Overland, camping and wheeling in Vermont Memorial Day weekend, and hitting the Trails in Montana with X Overland in July. We push these vehicles and we need braking systems capable of handling added weight, oversized tires, elevation changes, and unpredictable conditions.
That's why we have Powerbrake brake kits on our vehicles.
They're also trusted by some of the most respected names in the overland industry, including XOverland, whose vehicles travel some of the most remote terrain in the world for a living.

Adding capability to your vehicle should never come at the expense of safety. Suspension kits help carry the weight. Tire upgrades improve your traction. Armor protects your vehicle. But none of those modifications matter if you can't stop your vehicle when it counts.
At the end of the day, the most important part of your travels is getting home safely.
Need help choosing the right Powerbrake kit for your vehicle and setup? Our team is here to help. Whether you're building a fully outfitted overland rig, adding larger tires, or simply looking for more confidence behind the wheel, we can recommend the right kit for your needs. Most kits are in stock and ready to be professionally installed at our shop or shipped directly to your home.
