Choosing the Right Rooftop Tent for You

You’ve done your research, you've watched a ton of YouTube vides, and you're officially sold on an Alu-Cab rooftop tent. But now comes the tricky part: which one?

Choosing the right rooftop tent can feel overwhelming with how many are on the market, especially when the lineup is as impressive as Alu-Cab's. Each model designed for different vehicles, travel styles, and group sizes, the question isn’t “Which tent is best?” it’s “Which tent is best for you?”

Alu-Cab rooftop tents are known for being lightweight, tough enough to survive questionable off-road skills, and extremely easy to set up. They’re built for real-world travel and designed to last for years of adventure. Are there cheaper options out there? Sure. But time and time again, we see customers upgrade to Alu-Cab after trying something else first. If you know you’re serious about the overland lifestyle, it often pays to start with the right tent from the get-go and save yourself the headache.

With two new rooftop tents joining the lineup, Alu-Cab now offers four models, each unique in it's own way. Let's break them down and help you figure out which one fits your style.

RT-2S: Compact, Capable, and Space-Saving

The RT-2S is a compact hard-shell rooftop tent engineered for SUVs, station wagons, and smaller trucks. Its small footprint preserves valuable roof space so you can still mount your bikes, boards, or a roof box to the roof for your extra gear!

While it may look small when folded, don't let the RT-2S fool you. Inside, it opens up to a surprisingly comfortable sleeping platform measuring 4.5 ft wide x 6.68 ft long. That's basically a queen size mattress.

It also includes many of the same premium features found on larger Alu-Cab tents, including:

  • Pre-wired solar capability

  • Integrated LED lighting for those late nights

  • USB charging ports

  • Left- or right-side deployment

  • Integrated rainfly for stormy days

The RT-2S is ideal for smaller vehicles and adventurers who want a capable, high-quality tent without giving up precious roof space for other gear.

RT-4S: Maximum Space for Families and Long Stays

The RT-4S is Alu-Cab’s largest rooftop tent to date and one of the largest on the market. If you travel with children or pets, this is the tent for you. After the success of the ModCAP Family Camper, customers wanted the same concept in a standalone rooftop tent, and the RT-4S delivers just that.

With over 48 square feet of sleeping space (for reference, a standard king-size mattress is about 42 square feet), the RT-4S is perfect for families, friends, or anyone who just likes to stretch out.

Standout features include:

  • Three points of access

  • Left- or right-side deployment

  • Dual-color LED lighting (two fixtures)

  • USB, USB-C, and 12V power ports

  • Raised external air vents and integrated heater vents

  • Twelve internal storage pockets

  • Bedding storage inside when closed (huge plus!)

  • Pre-wired solar capability

  • Clear, marine-grade, UV-resistant PVC roof for a skylight/moonroof

There’s nothing quite like falling asleep under the stars and the RT-4S lets you do just that from the comfort and security of your rooftop tent.

Gen 3-R: The Tried-and-True All-Rounder

Want the best features of the RT-4S without all the bulk? Meet the Gen 3-R, Alu-Cab's most popular rooftop tent. It's built for serious travel but designed to be effortless. It's low profile, aerodynamic for the long hauls, insulated for any weather, and lighting fast to set up.

Great for two people who want comfort, durability, and versatility without taking up so much space.

Key features include:

  • Integrated heater vent

  • Touch-sensitive interior lighting

  • USB and 12V charging ports

  • Pre-wired solar compatibility

  • Optional backrest and drop-down table for added comfort

  • Bedding and ladder can be stored inside the tent when closed

This tent includes integrated roof rails for extra gear such as solar panels, Maxtrax, kayaks, and more. Inside, the sleeping platform measures 51 inches wide, about the same as a full-size bed, and 82 inches long — longer than a queen mattress, which is a lifesaver for taller travelers.

Still Not Sure Which Tent Is Right for You?

Ask yourself a few key questions:

  • How many people will usually sleep in the tent?

  • What vehicle are you mounting the tent on?

  • Do you need to save roof space for other gear?

  • Will you keep bedding in the tent or the vehicle?

  • Are you prioritizing fast deployment or maximum interior space?

  • Will you be camping year-round or mainly in fair weather?

  • Looking for extra space for dogs or kids in bed?

Still unsure? Our team is always happy to help you find the tent that fits your lifestyle. No matter which tent you choose, you're investing in quality, durability, and a lifetime of adventures!
