To delay the spread of COVID-19, many rest stop facilities across the country have been closed. According to Business Insider, last week Michigan closed its 14 welcome centers, Texas shut down the lobbies of 12 Travel Information Centers, and Pennsylvania closed all its rest areas and welcome centers to the public. A couple days later, Vermont followed these states lead, ceasing operation of all their information and welcome centers to slow the spread of COVID-19 as all as to protect their employees who are particularly vulnerable with 75% of them being in the at-risk category.

As a result of these closures, many drivers, who are essential transport personnel, are left without a place to relieve themselves, sleep, shower, or eat. The closures caused a large outcry from drivers, and in response to the appeal from drivers and the Trump Administration, Pennsylvania reopened the parking lots of nearly half the stops and reopened their 17 service plazas for indoor restrooms and limited food service.

Though reopened only in Pennsylvania, there is remains a large uncertainty on how long they will stay that way. Many other states are considering similar closures to contain the spread of the contagious COVID-19 virus and discourage travel.
