Vision X ADV Driving Lights
I’ve made a living out of wandering around the country in my
Jeep, hopping from one state to the next, in search of unique wilderness destinations that reside well off of the beaten path. Heretofore, I would only explore during the day, and I would make an extra effort to locate a campsite before dusk.
While driving in unfamiliar territory at night, one might miss a turn, or a point-of-interest.
While trying to find a campsite in the dark, one might not be able to see the visual cues that suggest a place is unsafe; derelict structures, signs of irresponsible human behavior, or a strange vehicle that seems out-of-place.
Whether it is day or night, having sufficient light means more than simply being able to spot road hazards - it is about situational awareness. It is about instantaneous knowledge gathering based on not only what lies ahead, but also on that which is in your periphery.
In the context of off-highway adventure, the factory headlights and foglights on my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited are woefully inadequate. Alone, they simply aren’t sufficient for nighttime exploring. Fortunately, this can be remedied by installing a pair of Adventure Series LED Driving Lights from Vision X.
Adventure Series
Vision X engineered the ADV Series to provide a single lighting solution for all of your nighttime driving needs. It utilizes the same multi-LED technology present in their Light Cannon CG2 series, but the ADV Series is supplemented by elliptical optics to provide a short-distance spread in addition to the long-distance beam.
The ADV Series lights are designed to provide a high-output, combination beam, in an elegant and extremely durable body. They’re well-suited for anyone who needs a high-performance driving light, however they’re absolutely ideal for overland travelers who might need a dispersed pattern for both short-distance, and long-distance illumination.
To give the ADV Series lights their own unique character, Vision X back-lit the dead space between the LED reflectors with a smooth, subtle white light. This “Halo” feature is a very understated and tasteful daytime running light that can be wired to any power source, or not utilized at all to no ill-effect.
The Specs
There are currently two models to choose from:
The moderately-sized ADV 6700, which is a 80W, 6.7” diameter light that delivers 8,560 raw lumens, draws 6.7 amps, and weighs in at 5 lbs. These lights are sold as a pair (CGA-CPMH8MKIT) and are also available individually (CGA-CPMH8M).
The larger ADV 8700, which is a 140W, 8.7” diameter assembly that delivers 14,980 raw lumens, draws 11.7 amps, and weighs in at 9 lbs. These lights are sold as a pair (CGA-CPMH14MKIT) and are also available individually (CGA-CPMH14M).
My Jeep is equipped with a pair of the ADV 6700s.
Build Quality
The ADV Series lights are waterproof to IP-69K specifications. They feature a tough polycarbonate lens that will easily deflect stones and debris, a die-cast aluminum body that is fluted for optimal heat dissipation, and a heavy-duty steel trunnion engineered for maximum adjustability.
Initial impressions of build quality are very favorable. Components seem very high-quality, extremely sturdy, and resistant to corrosion. Electrical connectors are molded and are very durable. Their construction instills confidence, and I expect them to easily outlast the vehicle that they’re installed on.
Installation and Wiring
It took me roughly a half-a-day to install two ADV 6700 lights on the front of my Jeep. They were mounted on my front bumper in minutes. The bulk of the time was spent routing the wiring through the engine compartment, to my accessory terminal, and then through the firewall to the switch on my dashboard.
A wiring harness is available from Vision X that makes installation a snap. It includes a switch, two relays (one for each light), and the appropriate connectors. With the Vision X wiring harness, no cutting and splicing is necessary, except for the Halo - which is by design.
The power source for the Halo is left to you discretion. I wired my Halo to my factory fog lights, for the sake of convenience, so when my fog lights are on, so is my Vision X Halo.
The lights also come with an electrical connector with pigtail wires, allowing you to easily create a custom wiring harness for your ADV lights, or to adapt them to an existing system.
Let There Be Light
These are the first aftermarket driving lights that I’ve had on my JK, which I’ve owned for over two years, and I must say, they were long overdue! The output of the lights is phenomenal, and I am now able to explore at night with much greater confidence.
They function as advertised, but in the case of my own Jeep, the difference is so profound, that I cannot tell whether or not my headlights are on when the Vision X ADV 6700s are on.
I was camping in Cherokee National Forest and had to roll out in the early morning, well before sunrise. For a half-an-hour, I wound my way through the mountains with the ADV lights on. As I approached civilization, I encountered oncoming traffic, so I turned the Vision X lights off, and then there was complete darkness. Unbeknownst to me, I had forgotten to turn my headlights on when I started driving, and had been depending solely on the ADV 6700s for miles!
It wasn’t until I got to Moab, Utah, that I really got to enjoy the amount of light offered by the Vision X ADV 6700s. In the desert, when you turn the lights on, they shine on for miles, and anything less than the ADV lights seems anemic.
I couldn’t be more pleased with the ADV Series of lights from Vision X, and I recommend them wholeheartedly. If you’d like to know more about my ongoing experience with the Vision X ADV 6700 Driving Lights, follow
