Cooking with a Skottle
Cooking on a Skottle is the combination of both a skillet and a Wok. The slight concave, like a Wok, works to keep the food you are cooking from rolling off. No more runaway hot dogs, all your food is directed towards the center of the Skottle. It also keeps all the juices and seasoning on the cooking surface rather than dripping through, which will make for flavorful less dry meals.
The skillet surface cooks raw foods evenly and eliminates any food slipping through the grates of a grill.
Cleaning / Seasoning
The great thing about cooking with the Skottle is you can treat it the same way you would cast iron. To maintain a well-seasoned non-stick surface, you should never use soap during cleanup.
- Heat a little water with the cooking disk
- scrub the surface to remove any bits of food stuck to the surface.
- Rinse the surface with clean water once the food debris has been thoroughly scrubbed.
- Thoroughly dry all surfaces with a towel
- Apply a protective coating of vegetable or flaxseed oil using a paper towel, making sure to apply oil to both the cooking surface and underside.
- Reignite the burner and adjust to medium-low heat and heat the Skottle until the oil just starts to smoke then turn off the burner.
- Rub the cooking surface one last time with the paper towel and let it cool
Benefits
The Skottle's large disk provides you with 2 separate cooking zones without the need of a second burner. You can place your raw foods in the center closest to the heat to cook properly. While vegetables or precooked food that only needs to be warmed up can be placed around the outside of the Skottle.
The Skottle's skillet like cooking surface opens the doors to more meal options than your usual Barbecue style / camping food. Breakfast no longer requires a pan for eggs, a pan for sausage, ect. Cook your eggs, potato's, sausage all together making it easier to keep an eye on. keep potato's warm while the sausage need more time to cook and be able to serve a meal without part of the meal being cold.
Dinner meals have gotten very creative using the Skottle, some camp favorites include:
- pizza
- tacos
- stir fry's
- fried vegetables
And don't forget desert! With Tembo Tusk's Skottle lid people have baked cinnamon rolls, pies and popcorn!
We'd love to hear from you!
